| Q11. |
What
Exactly Does Touchstone manufacture ? What is Semi-Precious
Jewelry ? |
|
What
is the difference between Semi- Precious Jewelry and Costume
Jewelry ? |
|
Touchstone
manufactures what we call or define as Semi-Precious
Jewelry .
This
is basically Non-Gold jewelry studded with either Natural
Semi-precious or Synthetic Gemstones. The metal used
is non-lead based metals and is Silver based. We manufacture
our jewelry in Silver (Either 92.5 %, 60% or 30% Silver
with the rest being an alloy principally consisting
of Copper and other metals), Brass (70% Copper, 25%
Zinc, 5% Silver) or a combination of Silver and Brass.
What
is Costume Jewelry ? vs Semi-Precious Jewelry ?
In
India - what is called “Costume Jewellery” is: |
|
 |
Jewellery
made of base metal (no silver content) |
 |
The
stones "studded" in it - are actually
"glued" in the "setting spaces"
as opposed to "Studded or hand Set" (like
in Real jewellery) and also |
 |
The
"stones" themselves are very cheap - made
of either "glass or plastic" (maybe "swarowski"
which is nevertheless a kind of lead glass or plastic) |
|
|
In costume jewelry
one uses low melting lead based metals - the manufacturing
in costume jewelry is by a very different method with
very different costing and is much cheaper to manufacture
and finish than the method that is used in manufacturing
our kind of Semiprecious Jewelry. Our kind of production
method is the same as that used in Gold Jewelry.
In Semi-Precious Jewelry
-
We "Hand Set"
or "Stud or Set" every stone in our Jewelry
by hand in the same way as real gold jewelry. It is
not glued like in "Costume" Jewelry. Another
difference is that our stones are either natural gemstones
or expensive synthetic gemstones (as compared to costume
jewelry's glass or paste). The value of studding natural
or synthetic gemstones is "durability" or
the “polish” on the surface of a gemstone not getting
“dulled” by time or “scratches”. Because hardness of
all gemstones used in jewelry (except pearl) is above
the hardness of quartz (which is principally "sand"
or "dust" contained in the air around us)
- these stones do not loose their shine or polish as
fast as "stones" stuck in costume jewelry.
That is why it costs to "make" or “cut” and
"polish" every gemstone. The gemstones that
we stud our jewelry with are natural Garnets, Rubies,
Emeralds, Sapphires, Tourmalines, Amethysts, Citrines,
Onyxes like Green , Red, Blue etc , moonstones and a
variety of other stones. Where we have to represent
diamond, we use Synthetic Cubic Zirconia popularly known
as CZ or "American Diamond" in India. This
we use in two types of gemstone cuts i.e. full brilliant
cut as well as the ancient style of Indian Diamond cut
called "Polki" or sometimes even "Kundan"
style cutting. We sometimes use synthetic rubies and
other synthetics depending on the need and colors required.
